Paternity/maternity
This is the most common relationship test, used to determine if a man is the biological father of a child.
Purpose: Provides conclusive results for child support cases, birth certificate changes, inheritance claims, and immigration requirements, as well as for peace of mind.
Methodology: Compares the child's DNA profile with the alleged father's DNA profile (and usually the mother's, though her sample is optional).
Maternity Testing
This test determines if a woman is the biological mother of a child.
Purpose: Often used for adoption cases, verifying hospital mix-ups, or immigration purposes.
Methodology: Compares the child's DNA profile with the alleged mother's DNA profile.
Grandparent(s)
This test is performed when the parents of a child are unavailable for testing, helping to establish the child's relationship to the paternal or maternal grandparents.
Purpose: Typically used in custody or social security benefit cases to prove a biological link through the grandparents.
Methodology: Compares the child's DNA with the DNA of the alleged paternal or maternal grandparents.
Siblings/Aunt/uncle/cousin
When the alleged father is unavailable for a paternity test, sibling or avuncular (aunt/uncle) testing can determine a biological connection.
Purpose: To determine the likelihood that two or more individuals share one or both biological parents.
Methodology: Compares the DNA profiles of the potential siblings (or the child and an alleged father's sibling) to calculate the statistical probability of a shared parent.
